April - Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and like many others, it brings an important conversation back into focus. Not because the issue only exists now, but because it gives it space. Visibility. A reason to actually stop and look at it.
But that only goes so far.
Because while awareness is widely discussed, prevention is often left sitting just beneath the surface. It’s referenced, supported, and agreed with, but not always explained in a way that people can recognise in their own environments.
A recent post from #We Ride Together asked about sexual violence prevention. It’s the kind of prompt that gets people thinking, but it also highlights something quite simple…While we may understand the principle in theory or in policy - most people aren’t entirely sure what prevention actually looks like in practice; in real situations, in real yards, and in real working environments.
In sport, especially in environments like equestrianism where relationships are close, hierarchies exist, and lines can become blurred, prevention can’t just sit in the background. It has to be understood, recognised, and applied in a way that makes sense day to day.
But that only happens when it is clear, and the spotlight stays on it.
This isn’t a quick conversation, and it doesn’t start and end with April. April may bring it into focus, but over the next few weeks, we’ll keep coming back to it through a series of articles.
We have no intention of overcomplicating or overanalysing it - quite the opposite. But we do want to delve deeper into what prevention actually means, where responsibility sits, and what safe environments look like in practice.
Because if it isn’t clear, it isn’t effective.
And if it isn’t effective, it isn’t prevention.
