Derville Meade Takes Charge: Historic Polo Club Elects Female President for the First Time in 153 Years
Situated in the heart of Dublin, the All Ireland Polo Club is one of the oldest institutions of its kind anywhere in the world. Now it is marking a managerial milestone. For the first time since its foundation in 1873, the organisation has appointed a woman to lead the club.
Derville Meade takes the helm for a two-year term beginning this July, with a stated ambition to align the club's heritage with a more robust business expansion strategy.
Meade arrives with executive credentials rooted in agribusiness and animal health. She is co-owner of Labstock MicroServices, a supplier of specialist equipment to veterinary laboratories and breeding centres. It is a background that gives her an unusually commercial read on a sport more often run on tradition than on balance sheets.
Her involvement in the sport is extensive. She has played polo since 2002 and has forged international equestrian and business ties over more than two decades in the game. Beyond her professional background, she is married to Noel Meade, one of Ireland's most decorated racehorse trainers and head of a leading European racing operation.
A club in transition
The appointment coincides with a broader restructuring phase at the AIPC. The club is advancing a modernisation plan that includes facility upgrades and new membership initiatives, and the repositioning is already evident in the calibre of brand partners it has secured, notably luxury automotive manufacturer Lexus.
The strategic logic is straightforward: capitalise on the club's prestige. The primary objective is to target corporate sponsorships and expand exclusive memberships, using the Phoenix Park setting and more than a century and a half of history as the pitch.
Philanthropy on the fixture list
Alongside the summer fixtures, the new leadership will integrate social responsibility into daily operations rather than treat it as an add-on. Leveraging her extensive experience in organising equestrian competitions, Meade plans to use the venue to host gala evenings and philanthropic days, raising funds for a range of charities and cementing the social commitment of the sporting community around the club.
It is a familiar model in international polo, where hospitality and fundraising have long underwritten the sport's finances, but one the AIPC has not previously pursued at scale.
A ground like no other
Established in 1873, the club sits among the oldest surviving polo institutions anywhere, behind only India's Calcutta Polo Club, founded in 1862, and the Malta Polo Club, founded in 1868.
Its real asset in a competitive global market, though, is where it plays. The Phoenix Park is the largest enclosed public park of any capital city in Europe, running to more than 700 hectares, and the club has occupied its ground there since the 1870s. Few clubs anywhere can offer sponsors a setting of that scale and prestige inside a European capital, and it is that asset, rather than the year above the gate, that Meade's commercial strategy is built to sell.
