Eventing Community Mourns the Loss of Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue

The international eventing community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two riders following separate cross-country accidents on Saturday, 18 July. Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue, both respected competitors and dedicated horsewomen, tragically lost their lives in unrelated incidents just hours apart. Sophie Fouracre, 34, died following an accident while competing at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire, aboard Rhubarbsfox Brittania. Later the same day, Kerry Donoghue, 42, lost her life following a separate incident at Penrith Horse Trials in Cumbria, while riding Carneyhaugh Rua. Medical teams responded immediately at both venues, but despite every effort, neither rider could be saved. Both horses were examined by veterinary teams and were reported to be uninjured. The devastating news has sent shockwaves through the equestrian world, with tributes pouring in from friends, fellow competitors, officials and organisations who have spoken of two women remembered not only for their commitment to the sport, but also for the kindness, friendship and passion they brought to the eventing community. British Eventing has extended its deepest sympathies to the families, friends and loved ones of both riders, confirming that full reviews of both incidents will be carried out in accordance with its established procedures. For many within the sport, the past week has been one of profound sadness. While the days and weeks ahead will inevitably bring reflection, this is first and foremost about remembering two lives lost far too soon and standing alongside the families, friends and communities whose lives have been changed forever.
