Horses, Money and Taking Control: A Conversation with Charlotte Watson

Horses, Money and Taking Control: A Conversation with Charlotte Watson

Talking about money can feel uncomfortable at the best of times.

Add horses into the mix, and most of us would probably rather muck out ten stables than sit down and properly look at what we are spending.

In this episode of the Equitas Podcast, I’m joined by Charlotte Watson, a UK-based financial adviser working within a regulated firm, as well as a business owner, equestrian and mum, for a conversation that makes money feel a lot less intimidating.

Charlotte has a practical way of breaking things down. No judgement. No shame. No making people feel silly for asking questions. Just honest guidance around how we can start to understand our finances a little better.

From Horses to Financial Planning

Charlotte’s background is not what many people might expect from a financial adviser.

She grew up in a horsey family, with her dad working as a flat jockey, and later spent ten years lecturing in equine science before having her first child and retraining during lockdown.

That mix of horses, teaching and financial planning makes her approach really relatable. She understands the emotional side of horses, the lifestyle, the costs, and the way we often put everything else first while pushing our own financial security further down the list.

Why Horse People Need to Talk About Money

One of the biggest parts of our conversation was around the way equestrians budget - or often don’t.

We spoke about how horses are expensive, yes, but so are many hobbies and lifestyles. The difference is that horse people often carry a lot of guilt or avoidance around the cost, rather than looking at it clearly and making a plan.

Charlotte talks through a really simple way to start:

look at your essential spending, your flexible spending, your horse costs, your income, and what is left.
It sounds basic, but it gives you back something really important — control.

Protecting Yourself First

One point that really stood out was how many of us insure our horses before we properly protect ourselves.

Charlotte spoke about income protection, life cover, wills, emergency funds and the importance of asking those difficult “what if” questions before life forces us to.

Because if we cannot protect ourselves, our income or our family, how can we protect the horses and people who depend on us?

It is one of those conversations that might feel uncomfortable at first, but it is genuinely empowering once you start looking at it properly.

Business, Motherhood and Flexibility

We also spoke about self-employment, motherhood and the reality of building a business while raising children.

Charlotte shared openly about growing her financial planning business around family life, using social media to build trust, and navigating maternity leave as a business owner - which, as many self-employed women know, often does not look like maternity leave at all.

A conversation about taking the fear out of money, asking better questions, and remembering that your future matters too.

There is a lot in this episode for equestrians, mums, business owners, and anyone who has ever felt intimidated by money or unsure where to start.
