The horse doesn't care - and neither do we

There is a moment that every rider knows. You're in the stable, or in the saddle, and whatever was weighing on you before you arrived starts to matter a little less. The horse doesn't know what you're carrying. It doesn't ask. It just responds to you, your energy, your breath, your presence. Nothing else.

For a lot of young people, that moment is everything.

If you're at a point in your life where you're figuring out who you are - your identity, your sexuality, how you fit into the world, and that can be an enormous amount to carry. It can feel like it follows you everywhere. Into school, into friendships, into family dinners, into sports, and into spaces where you're not quite sure how much of yourself it's safe to show.

The yard is different. The horse is different.

Your horse doesn't have an opinion about who you love or how you identify. It doesn't need you to explain yourself, or justify yourself or be anything other than present. The relationship between a rider and their horse is built on trust, attention, and honesty, and none of those things have anything to do with who you are outside the stable.

That's not a small thing. For many people - young and not so young - the yard has been a place of genuine sanctuary.

We think that matters. We also think it's worth saying clearly.

You belong here.
In equestrian sport.
In this community.

Equitas exists to support everyone in equestrian sport - to give the community the tools, the platform, and the voice it deserves. And that means all of it. Every rider, every identity, every background. Not because it's June, and not because it makes us look good to say so, but because that's what community actually means.

If you're a young person reading this and you're figuring things out, we want you to know that the equestrian world has space for you. The horses already knew that. We're just saying it out loud.

And if you ever want to talk or share about your riding, your story, your experience, the door is always open.

If you're an LGBTQ+ equestrian who would like to share your story on the Equitas podcast or a future livestream, we'd love to hear from you. Completely casual, zero pressure.
